If you think of your business as a piece of machinery, the gears,
electronics and control devices are technical skills.
Lubricating oil and grease are the soft skills.
Is it time for an oil change?

Teaching how, showing why
Several years ago one of my staff bought a new truck.  He was pleased with it, but at about 30,000 kms the engine siezed.  I also happened to know the mechanic who looked at the vehicle, and he told me that the engine was bone dry.  No oil!

In hard times, some businesses are cutting back on"non-essential" training, but neglecting soft skills training can come at great cost.  The oil of soft skills is not an optional extra; it is what enables the machinery to do its job!

In the months following September 11, the airline industry went into a tail-spin.  World wide, airlines slashed spending and training activities were all but suspended.

Except for Southwest Airlines.  This innovative company ramped up their training, understanding that staff needed more encouragement, not less.  Is it any wonder that Southwest is one of the most successful airlines on earth?
